SMA Learning Series: Protecting and enhancing tree canopy on private property

Overview

Growing and maintaining green neighborhoods with an abundance of tree canopy cover is a goal many communities hold. However, the impacts of development and climate change make this challenging, as well as the fact that most tree urban tree canopy is on private property. The Trees and Landscape Team in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, enforces the tree protection bylaw (ordinance) by serving the community as stewards for the trees while bringing balance to the built environment.

How does the city enforce tree protection rules for private property trees? What initiatives are working to foster tree planting and tree retention? Join Carolina Arango, Arborist for the City of Surrey, BC, to explore the world of protecting private trees. Attendees will learn:

Learning objectives

  1. The ins and outs of Surrey’s tree protection bylaw (ordinance) and how the community enforces the rules.
  2. City Forestry initiatives currently underway or under review that aim to grow our involvement in tree and environmental protection.
  3. How the City uses technology to reach its tree canopy goals.
