Managing E-List Subscriptions With Your SMA Member Profile

Accessing E-lists for Subscription Management
After logging in click ‘My Profile’ located on the gray Members Only navigation bar at the top of your browser and then click the ‘View E-Lists’ tab. The tab will show all E-Lists that your member profile is subscribed to as well as E-Lists that are available for you to join.

Features of the ‘View E-lists tab’
Each E-List has its own page that will display E-List messages and members. This area can be used by E-List members to post and reply to messages via the web interface via their member profile.

If you are an E-List moderator you will control the approval process of messages through this page.

The View E-Lists Tab displays all E-Lists that you, as an SMA member are subscribed to as well as those that you have the ability to join. This tab will display the E-List name, address, email delivery option, and delivery address to the user. You can edit your subscription options or unsubscribe from the E-List.

  • Name - Clicking on the E-List name will bring you to that E-List’s page.
  • E-List Address - The email address used by the E-List.
  • Email Delivery - Clicking the Edit button will allow you to turn email delivery on or off. You can subscribe to the E-List but use only the profile web interface to send and receive messages if you wish. No more cluttered inbox and you’ll be able to see messages as a thread in your profile! Should you choose to receive messages to your inbox you’ll continue to see messages in this section of your profile as well. Instant archive!
  • Delivery Address -Delivery email address for messages (the email address for the inbox at which you’d like to receive your E-list messages should you choose email delivery).
  • Unsubscribe. This link will unsubscribe you from the E-List.

Viewing E-List Messages
The E-List Messages tab will display all messages sent to the E-List.  From this page you can also send new messages to the E-List. When you post a message here those subscribers that have chosen email delivery will also receive the message via email as well.

  • Post a New Message - This button will open a modal window and allow you to compose a message to the E-List. Enter a subject and message and optionally attach a file, then click Post Message.
  • Subject - This displays the subject of your message. Clicking on it will display the message and any related comments.
  • Messages - This column will show you how many messages and replies have been sent to the E-List with this subject.
  • Author - The author displays the Contact Name field of the user who created the message. Clicking on the author’s name will bring you to his profile.
  • Date/Time - The date/time field provides a time and date stamp when the original message was sent.
  • *Message is pending approval. A single red star * will display next to messages that are pending approval. You will only see this if the E-List is moderated.
  • *Message and/or replies are pending approval. A double red star * will display next to messages and/or replies to those messages that are pending approval if the E-List is moderated.

Online Discussion Forums

A Forum is a location that you enter and leave messages. The message is not e-mailed to a large  group. It can be seen and responded to only by members who enter that forum and view your message. SMA will set up several forums exclusively for member use as well as forums that are accessible to both the public and members.

To enter the Forum area click SMA Forums from the left navigation bar or go to the header bar at the top of the page and under Community click SMA Forums. Those forums that are for members only will require that you login with your username and password before they are displayed for your use. Only those forums available to both the public and members will display if you are a member but have not yet logged in.

Elist Rules

By joining and using SMA's e-mail lists, you agree that you have read and will follow the rules and guidelines set for these peer discussion groups. You also agree to reserve list discussions for topics best suited to the medium. Note that basic questions on arboriculture should be posed to other sites, such as www.treelink.org or referred to the ISA website, www.isa-arbor.com.

As with any community, there are guidelines governing behavior on the Elist. For instance, violating antitrust regulations, libeling others, selling, and marketing are not permissible. Please take a moment to acquaint yourself with these important guidelines. If you have questions, contact the web administrator. SMA reserves the right to suspend or terminate membership on all lists for members who violate these rules.

  • Do not challenge or attack others. The discussions on the lists are meant to stimulate conversation not to create contention. Let others have their say, just as you may.
  • Do not post commercial messages. The cyberspace term for this is spamming. Contact people directly with products and services that you believe would help them.
  • Use caution when discussing products. Information posted on the lists is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws.
  • All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials are strictly prohibited. Do not post anything in an Elist message that you would not want the world to see or that you would not want anyone to know came from you.
  • Please note carefully all items listed in the disclaimer and legal rules below, particularly regarding the copyright ownership of information posted to the list.
  • Remember that SMA and other Elist participants have the right to reproduce postings to this list.
  • Do not use email features such as "read receipt" and "out of office."

Disclaimer and legal rules

This Elist is provided as a service of the Society of Municipal Arborists.  SMA accepts no responsibility for the opinions and information posted on this site by others. SMA disclaims all warranties with regard to information posted on this site, whether posted by SMA or any third party; this disclaimer includes all implied warranties of merchantability and fitness. In no event shall SMA be liable for any special, indirect, or consequential damages or any damages whatsoever resulting from loss of use, data, or profits, arising out of or in connection with the use or performance of any information posted on this site.

Do not post any defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials. Do not post any information or other material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner. By posting material, the posting party warrants and represents that he or she owns the copyright with respect to such material or has received permission from the copyright owner. In addition, the posting party grants SMA and users of this list the nonexclusive right and license to display, copy, publish, distribute, transmit, print, and use such information or other material.

Messages should not be posted if they encourage or facilitate members to arrive at any agreement that either expressly or impliedly leads to price fixing, a boycott of another's business, or other conduct intended to illegally restrict free trade. Messages that encourage or facilitate an agreement about the following subjects are inappropriate: prices, discounts, or terms or conditions of sale; salaries; profits, profit margins, or cost data; market shares, sales territories, or markets; allocation of customers or territories; or selection, rejection, or termination of customers or suppliers.

SMA does not actively monitor the site for inappropriate postings and does not on its own undertake editorial control of postings. However, in the event that any inappropriate posting is brought to SMA's attention, SMA will take all appropriate action.

SMA reserves the right to terminate access to any user who does not abide by these guidelines.

Elist Etiquette

  • Include a signature tag on all messages. Include your name, affiliation, location, and e-mail address.
  • State concisely and clearly the specific topic of the comments in the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.
  • Include only the relevant portions of the original message in your reply, delete any header information, and put your response before the original posting.
  • Only send a message to the entire list when it contains information that everyone can benefit from.
  • Send messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" to individuals--not to the entire list. Do this by using your e-mail application's forwarding option and typing in or cutting and pasting in the e-mail address of the individual to whom you want to respond.
  • Do not send administrative messages, such as "remove me from the list," through the listserve. Instead, follow the directions at the top of this page to change your settings or to remove yourself from a list. Warn other list subscribers of lengthy messages either in the subject line or at the beginning of the message body with a line that says "Long Message."
